Watercolour art retreats

Have you ever wished you could slow down, soak in the beauty of a place, and capture it in your sketchbook? I'm Renee Walden — a watercolour artist and passionate plein air painter — and that's exactly what I help people do.

Forget selfies! The real magic happens when you sketch your travels.

What to Expect

  • Art retreats that nourish your creativity
  • Time to slow down and truly see the world around you
  • Supportive teaching — no experience needed
  • Inspiring locations, from medieval French villages, to Italian hill towns to lakeside New Zealand views
  • Local cuisine, good wine, lots and lots of laughter!
  • A friendly, welcoming community of fellow creatives

Renee’s watercolor retreat at Perigord was delightful and well organized. She was nothing but encouraging to all levels of artistic experience and combined art education with humor, friendship, history, and relaxation perfectly.

I’ve been taking classes on Renee’s Patreon after discovering her on Instagram. I love her style of sketching and painting. Her teaching is excellent, she not only shows you the how, but also… Read more… explains the why. Recently, I had the pleasure to join her on one of her painting retreats in France. Our group had so much fun painting and spending time together in the relaxing atmosphere Renee created. After a painting demo we each got individual advice while we were painting, helping us to improve our style and technique and to get more confident in our art.

let's paint together

Capture your life in colour.

Since 2017, I’ve been running watercolour art retreats and painting holidays. These are joy-filled adventures with sketchbooks, watercolour, laughter, good food, and a glass of local wine at the end of the day. These retreats are all about learning, creating, and filling your sketchbook (and your soul) with colourful memories.

Think of it as a the best trip you could ever imagine!

What to expect on a painting retreat.

Relaxed painting and sketching sessions in beautiful spots — a bustling market, a sleepy village square, or a sunlit garden. Studio time for demos and tips. Individual guidance, because small groups mean you’re never left staring at a blank page.

Absolutely everything taken care of so that all we have to think about is painting!

No rush, no stress, just painting, chatting, exploring, and soaking up the atmosphere. By the end, you’ll have a sketchbook bursting with your creations, new skills, and, for sure, a few new friends.

Who these watercolour retreats are for.

Anyone who loves to create, travel, and see the world in colour. Beginners welcome. Experienced artists welcome. Solo travellers welcome. Partners welcome. Friends, family, grandmas and grandkids welcome (it's happened!)

Why travel sketching?

Unlike a photo, your sketches capture the full experience — the light, the movement, the smells of the market… the whole story. Travel sketching turns ordinary moments into memories you’ll treasure forever. You'll capture your journey in a way that feels alive and deeply personal.

My aim? To inspire you to never go anywhere without a sketchbook again.

What's special about a painting trip?

I was lucky enough to attend Renee’s France Retreat this past June and had one of the best experiences of my life! Renee is a gifted teacher and not to mention just an incredibly fun person to be around. Before attending this retreat I always dreamed of feeling confident to sketch outside, but felt… Read more… intimidated by buildings and other complex subjects. Renee has an amazing way of breaking down complicated subjects into concrete steps. Watching her paint in real time, and explain her “why” behind choices such as color palettes and composition was so valuable to me. I learned so much about perspective, capturing light and shadow, and questions to ask yourself when planning a painting that I now apply to my creative practice since coming back. I also feel so much more comfortable sketching on location which is adding so much joy to my life. I can’t recommend her classes and retreats highly enough and look forward to continuing learning online (and hopefully one day again in person) with Renee!

I have taken lessons with Renee in three formats: via Patreon, online zoom classes, and through an in-person workshop. Renee is an excellent teacher! She encourages one to grow by giving kind feedback and guidance, but leaves plenty of space for one to stretch on their own. Renee’s teaching… Read more… abilities are only topped by her kindness — she’s such a fun person to spend time with as well as to learn from!

The retreat was a fabulous experience for me as a studio watercolour artist with little experience in plein air painting. Also, journaling through sketching is a new experience for me. I love to travel and my new lessons in journaling with watercolour will be an integral part of my future trips.

I have been truly fortunate to attend Renee's watercolor retreats on two occasions, and both experiences have been nothing short of transformative. Her teaching style is not only exemplary but also infused with genuine support and encouragement that makes learning so much more enjoyable. As a… Read more… Patreon member, I continue to benefit from her invaluable tips and techniques that have significantly enriched my watercolor practice. I wholeheartedly recommend joining her Patreon community and participating in one of her retreats. Each journey is sure to surpass your expectations, and beyond her exceptional skills, Renee exudes warmth and kindness, making her a joy to learn from and be around.
